Saint-Jean-de-Luz is one of those places that exudes history, charm and a taste of the sea. It is a town that invites you to take a stroll through its historic centre, impregnated with the essence of the past, its picturesque streets, the small fishing port, and the beautiful promenade that overlooks the beautiful sandy beach, one of the most beautiful on the French Atlantic coast.
The town has a strong seafaring past and is also one of the most historic tourist towns in France. Once a land of corsairs, kings and fishermen, today the small and charming town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz is one of the jewels of the French Basque Country.
The streets of the old town preserve the flavour of another era, lined with old buildings, elegant mansions and beautiful buildings that maintain the style of the typical architecture of the area. Rue Gambetta is one of the main commercial arteries, where you will find shops of all kinds as well as the most outstanding building, the Church of San Juan Bautista, where the royal wedding between Louis XIV of France and the Infanta of Spain, Maria Teresa, took place. Inside it hides a beautiful baroque altarpiece from the 17th century.

Lose yourself in the charming streets of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, visit aristocratic Biarritz with its museum of the sea, a veritable four-storey oceanographic laboratory, benefit from the properties of the Atlantic and savour the delicious Basque-French gastronomy. A delicacy that is truly worth trying is the Piment d’Espelette (“Espelette Pepper”), as well as the delicious beef stew “Axoa”, and there is no doubt that you won’t be able to resist the famous “Gateau basque” filled with cream and black cherry jam.
Going for pintxos in the Parte Vieja of the beautiful city of San Sebastian, about 50 km from Chantaco, is a way of getting to know the culture of San Sebastian, haute cuisine made miniature, with elaborate flavours concentrated in small and delicious creations. For the best views of the city, take the funicular to the top of Monte Igueldo where you will enjoy breathtaking views of the city, its streets and its “Belle Epoque” buildings and the almost perfect layout of the bay.
